OneNet / One Network for Europe
A new
generation of grid services is in the making to enhance the power generation
system. Demand response, storage and distributed generation of energy are key
for creating fair, transparent and open conditions for the consumer. However,
making this work requires the development of new products and services and the
creation of a new IT architecture. The EU-funded OneNet project is taking on
this ambitious endeavour. It proposes innovative mechanisms of platform
federation that are key technical enablers, made possible through a strong
consortium that includes an impressive list of grid operators as well as key IT
actors, leading research institutions and two of the most relevant grid
operator associations. As part of its broader plan, the project will mobilise
the international energy community via a large-scale forum. OneNet project aims at developing an open and
flexible architecture to transform the actual European electricity system,
which is often managed in a fragmented country- or area-level manner, into a
pan-European smarter and more efficient ecosystem, where market and network
technical operations are reciprocally coordinated closer to real time:
i) among
them,
ii) across
different countries
iii) while
maximizing the consumer capabilities to participate in an open market structure
OneNet
objectives include the design of a new market structure based on the analysis
of the present gaps between the proposed, theoretical, new market design and
the current practice adopted in Europe. The ongoing tasks are monitoring the
progress of the pilots with regards to the new market model and provide
guidance to mitigate the identified gaps.
Additionally,
OneNet aims at upscaling, adapting, validating and test the proposed OneNet
architecture. Initially the project collected and consolidated relevant use
cases and solutions developed in previous European projects and then used the
results of such analysis to define the specific use cases for the OneNet IT
architecture as well as a first version of the architecture itself. The
architecture will be continuously updated during the lifetime of the project,
considering the experience gained in the pilots.
